Vatsim: Gate assigment via ACARS

A few days ago I was flying on VATSIM when something unexpected happened.

Normally when I get an ACARS message it’s just the usual ping-pong from my own requests — fetch the flight plan from Simbrief, get the load sheet, update the weather, things like that.

But this time… I hadn’t requested anything. Still curious, I pressed “Read.”

The message said:
“Expect gate C10 at Schiphol. Regards, DutchVacc.”

For a second I just stared at the screen.

The Amsterdam Tower controller had actually sent me a message telling me which gate to expect once I landed — about 15 minutes ahead of arrival.

I’ve never tried CPDLC-style communication via ACARS between ATC and pilot before, so it completely caught me off guard.

And honestly… I just thought it was incredibly cool.

It’s little things like this that make VATSIM feel so alive and immersive.

So a big thank you to the Dutch controllers on VATSIM for adding that extra touch and making the flight even more memorable.
